Summary Of Position

The Animal Health Technician I/II is responsible for executing animal care duties and responsibilities that enable us to support rapid advancement of preclinical programs.

Responsibilities And Job Duties

  • Responsible for maintaining a clean, safe environment both for the animals and for every person who enters the facility, and for ensuring the entire vivarium operates at a level that meets or exceeds IACUC standards. Ensures all surgical equipment and procedure rooms are decontaminated in accordance with all cleaning schedules and that laboratory waste is packaged appropriately for monthly pick up.
  • Performs vivarium environmental checks on weekends to ensure that the animals remain healthy and to confirm that the animal holding rooms are functioning properly including temperature, humidity and airflow as per IACUC regulations.
  • Ensures that the inventory and supplies for the vivarium are maintained at appropriate levels.
  • Manages and observe animals for general health and overall wellbeing and responds appropriately when sickness or other issues are observed.
  • Prepares and submits required written records, as well as maintains essential records and logs, charts, and inventories. Ensures the records and logs, including controlled substance inventory and controlled substance use, animal health, facility environmental logs, and facility temperatures are maintained accurate and detailed and meet IACUC standards.
  • Works with Animal Modeling research staff to execute tumor model development studies, pharmacokinetic studies and efficacy studies from start to finish, including data entry within the Study Director / Pristima program. Responsible for implantation of tumor cells, administration of study compounds, data collection, health monitoring, and tissue collection
  • Performs or assists investigators in the preparation and performance of minor surgical or technical procedures including but not limited to collection of samples / tissues for biochemical and molecular analysis, immunizations (particularly IV injections) bleeding of experimental animals (retro-orbital route) and measurement of tumors
  • Prepares tissues and delivers to collaborators for ex-vivo Florescent Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) biochemical, histological and/or molecular analysis.
  • Monitors disease evolution and harvests tissues or organs using aseptic techniques. Follows proper protocols for anesthetizing research animals and may also humanely sacrifice mice designated for euthanasia, both in accordance with appropriate ASPs and facility SOPs
  • Collects and records research data and biological specimens in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice Regulations (GLPs), study protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in Study Director.
  • Follows all GLPs, SOPs, processes and company policies when performing all job functions

Minimum Qualifications

Animal Health Technician I

Education And Experience & Other Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline

OR

  • A H/S diploma plus two (2) years of related laboratory/vivarium experience

Animal Health Technician II

Education And Experience & Other Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline and 2 years of related experience

OR

  • A H/S diploma plus four (4) years of related laboratory/vivarium experience

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Problem solving skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate with management in a demanding scientific environment
  • Ability to keep detailed and accurate computer records and maintain/update data in computer-based applications/databases
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to use good judgment
  • Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures for animal facilities and the basic requirements for
  • maintaining laboratory animals and performing scientific procedures involving animal testing and data collection
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
