Job Description
Responsibilities:
Clinical and Surgical Care:
- Perform clinical medicine services, including physical exams, diagnosis, treatment, and surgery, for all laboratory animal species housed at Customer site.
- Provide veterinary professional support during experimental and non-experimental periods in compliance with SOPs and protocols.
- Interpret clinical pathology results, imaging studies, and prognoses for diseases and injuries, and prescribe treatments.
- Maintain detailed documentation of clinical activities in animal medical records using the SOAP format.
Operational Support:
- Assist with reviewing SOPs, preparing for oversight visits, and addressing inspection remarks.
- Ensure compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations where applicable.
- Review pending animal studies, assess resource needs, and ensure appropriate support is in place.
Personnel Training and Supervision:
- Provide guidance and training to veterinary technicians and animal caretakers regarding treatments and follow-up procedures.
- Conduct training for government personnel on topics such as animal observation, safe work practices, and husbandry procedures in research environments.
Program Compliance and Reporting:
- Enroll in and comply with the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP) and Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP).
- Promptly report changes in health status, injuries, or illnesses to the appropriate authorities.
- Ensure proper record-keeping and compliance with regulatory requirements for veterinary licenses.
Professional Development and Collaboration:
- Attend continuing education programs sufficient to maintain licensure and certifications.
- Conduct market research and review scientific literature to provide recommendations for new equipment, supplies, and procedures.
- Travel locally (within a 75-mile radius) to observe and develop innovative approaches for animal care.
Equipment and Supply Management:
- Notify the Contract PM of required medical equipment, supplies, and instruments.
- Ensure proper maintenance and safe operation of medical equipment and supplies.
Surge Capability:
- Respond to increased service demands during mission surges, ensuring quality and efficiency of operations.
Qualifications:
- Possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
- Licensed to practice in one state within the United States
- Minimum 1 year of clinical experience with large animals (swine and cattle)
- Experience must include working with experimentally infected animals
- Effective verbal and written communication
- Must be able to receive and maintain a Personal Security Level 3 (PSL-3) clearance and participate in the Occupational Health/Safety Programs
Preferred/Desired Education:
- Completion of an ACLAM-Recognized Residency:
- Residency in Laboratory Animal Medicine is highly desirable for expertise in clinical care and research involving laboratory animals.
- Advanced Certifications (Optional but Beneficial):
- Board certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine (DACLAM).
Experience Requirements:
- At least three (3) years of experience in laboratory animal clinical medicine and surgery.
- Experience supporting non-human primates (NHPs) in a research setting is required.
- Experience with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) is desirable.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Work involves prolonged periods in auditory and physical isolation, including ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 containment areas.
- Exposure to hazardous infectious agents, biohazards, and other laboratory risks.
- Physical duties include standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and handling animals in various containment environments.
